Terry L. Wilmarth

Department of Computer Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

I received my B.S. in Computer Science at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1991 and my M.S. in Computer Science also at SUNY Buffalo in 1993. I worked as a teaching assistant, research assistant and instructor at various times during my education at SUNY Buffalo. I spent an additional two years there starting on a thesis before deciding to transfer to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

At Illinois, I have worked as a teaching assistant, been awarded a SURGE fellowship and was supported as a Research Assistant through CSAR. I completed my dissertation in the area of Parallel Discrete Event Simulation under the advisement of Dr. Laxmikant V. Kale in February 2005. I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at CSE working with CSAR.

Research:

I have two primary research interests. First is the topic of my thesis, parallel discrete event simulation. In particular, I enjoy studying optimistic synchronization methods for very large-scale simulations. My second research interest is parallel unstructured mesh adaptivity (refinement, coarsening, repair, smoothing, remeshing, etc.) and associated operations such as parallel mesh generation and parallel mesh partitioning. I am studying these problems in the context of PPL's ParFUM framework. I am also generally interested in parallel algorithms and data structures.

The research projects I am currently active on:

  • ParFUM, a parallel unstructured meshing framework
  • Rocrem, a suite of remeshing and solution data transfer tools for rocket meshes, developed for CSAR
  • POSE: Parallel Discrete Event Simulation
  • BigSim
  • Space-time meshing
