Trip to Las Vegas, March 11-18, 2000.

For my spring break Layla and I decided to check out Las Vegas together instead of just flying to one of our home towns. Since Harmony (Layla's sister, going to school in Pullman, WA) was on spring break the same week, she came with us as well.

We stayed in the Vagabond, a fairly run-down (read: cheap) 3-story hotel across from Treasure Island. Treasure Island stages a cannon battle between pirates and a British ship, complete with fire, explosions, and a sinking ship four times a night. (See image 8).

The first day we wandered, dazed, through the sprawling Caesar's Palace-- image 10 and 11 are a giant ammonite they had on display at The Discovery Channel store within the Palace mall. 13 and 15 are the volcano outside of the Mirage.

17 is a little marriage chapel on the strip-- note the neon cross atop the steeple!

65 is the best shot we could get of the fountain in front of the Bellagio-- it's an incredible sight. The fountain is at least the size of a football field, and the jets and lights are choriographed to timeless swing tunes. Unlike almost everything else in Vegas, the Bellagio fountain isn't trying to imitate (Treasure Island "pirates"; Mirage "volcano") or recapture ("Caesar's" palace) anything-- it just is.

Vegas is an amazing place, but *everything* is so bright, glitzy, dazzling, and crassly commercial that you get very jaded very quickly. Hence on Friday, we rented a car and drove to Hoover dam which, if nothing else, is made of non-glittering, non-flashing, unadorned concrete.
